A play set in West Berlin in the immediate postwar years when the humiliation of utter defeat revealed the true victims: single mothers and their children left to fend for themselves in a world of depleting mores and principles...This postwar period - upto about the sixties or over when the War widows and single mothers sought the comfort and wherewithals proffered by the occupying forces, mainly the African-Americans who manifested no desire whatsoever to return to their homelands, proliferated in miscegenation and a breed of half-castes and/or promiscuity of staggering stealth among the younger women population. The lax-entry qualifications towards doctoral studies at German universities, too, attracted a steady stream of Africans and Asians who might never have been able to qualify as professionals and academics elsewhere. Less apt German girl-students, too, (including, of course, girls from other European countries) made their way across the Channel to serve as au-pair girls in English homes: free and open contact with Asians, Africans and West-Indians and thus multi-partner liaisons easily proliferated. "All" it seemed hoped for marriage and the foreign passport which took them away from the pitiful situation "at home". This's a generalization, so exceptions must abound. In lieu of the birth-control pill, yet to make its appearance on the scene, most - it would seem - practised sodomy !
This play highlights these issues through the crucible of one household in West Berlin.
The Tenant in the Body: A Play in Two Acts by T. Wignesan
Set in the immediate post-World War II years, in West- Berlin, the play attempts to depict the lax morals interpersonal relations in a society struggling to overcome the humiliation and pain of defeat, looming already large since before the end of the war. Subject to foreign management and control in their daily lives, the very inherent cohesiveness of the family structure itself appears to come unstuck, an act which took its toll on the younger generation left to seek guidance and solace in their own sense of responsibility and reliance.
The disastrous consequences of the feelings of “racial superiority”, too, put in place in their consciousness through bludgeoning propaganda and the confusing echoes of haphazard “military victories” at the expense of integrity, dignity and humanity had had to be dismantled in their own minds, all too sadly – individually – and by themselves.
The Wirtschaftswünder development - made possible by the Marshall Plan - no doubt rectified some of the waywardness in self-sufficiency, but, at the same time, postwar Germany witnessed the growth of “double standards” in interpersonal relations: between the indigene and the foreigner, and, on the other hand, between covert Dritte Reich supporters and the former “spectator population” – a situation that likely (could have) produced a “dangerously self-inflicted” pathological condition.
