"Tell me all about Mrs Penrose.”
Even after almost six years in her company, Jacob still wasn’t quite used to the way Sarah’s agile mind darted from subject to subject. He knew there was no point in insisting that she rest for a while longer after Eva’s birth, so he simply answered the second part of her comment.
“There’s not much to tell, to be honest. I was only there for a few minutes. So I can report only two facts of any interest; Mrs Penrose is rather elderly and appears to be either crippled or suffering from some illness, because she was in a wheelchair, and her nephew, William Pascoe, seems to be in charge of the household.”
“Got his feet well and truly under the table, then?”
“I would say so.”
Sarah studied his face. “Was he rude to you, Jacob?”
“Only moderately. As long as he pays me, I can tolerate it.”
“Well, he’s new in Witney. He’ll soon learn that people have come to like you.”
“That may be stretching the truth slightly, but at least I’m not having mud and eggs thrown at my door now, as I did in the beginning.”
“Horrible people,” Sarah said, wrinkling her nose in distaste. “Is Mrs Penrose rich? I’d think so, if she lives in Church Green.”
“Reasonably wealthy, I would say. The house is well-furnished and there are several servants. I imagine she was left with a substantial inheritance when her husband died.”
“And that’s what that Mr Pascoe is after, mark my words. Trying to get in good with her, especially if she’s not very well, so when she dies, she’ll leave everything to him.”
