When Cora had gone out, Rose said, “Does your father know of your literary success?”
“Not yet. I thought it better to wait until his next query as to my financial condition and then surprise him with the announcement that his eldest son is not mired in poverty after all.”
“I should think he would be pleased.”
“Possibly, but he probably won’t admit it.”
“Never mind. Regardless of his reaction, I think it is quite an accomplishment.”
Rose poured the tea and Theo took his cup.
“I admit being slightly disappointed that we haven’t had any inquiries for a while,” he said. “I hope our early successes were not just a flash in the pan, as it were. I was confident that between our small advertisement and word of mouth, we could attract more custom.”
“I expect we will do,” Rose said. “After all, we are somewhat limited in our abilities, since you have to undertake most of the more active part of the investigations.”
“Whilst you supply the intelligent ideas and suggestions, not to mention any additional funds we require. One is as useful as the other, I feel.”
“Someday,” Rose said with feeling, “I shall be able to cast off my mourning and rejoin the world. But until then, I am afraid you will have to carry much of the load, and there is a limit as to what one man can be expected to do.”
“I am honored to be able to do that much.”
“And in the meantime, you will be able to bask in your glory as a published author whose book is bringing entertainment to the reading public.”
“It’s kind of you to say so,” Theo said. “I value your opinion, as you must know. Now, as to the possibility of future cases, I did have a rather odd letter delivered to me this morning, and I am not sure what it means. It is not exactly an inquiry, although I suppose it may be viewed in that light. I took the liberty of bringing it along with me, to see if you can draw any more sense from it than I could.”
