Harry enters college and has financial trouble as well as grade trouble. Romance cannot be in his plans but that changes.
Harry is invited to a sorority party by his chemistry lab partner, Rose. While there he is introduced to a brilliant aeronautical engineering student named Ellen. They play a game of chess and the capturing involves each other's hearts. Ellen tends to be a career woman and Harry wants more. After graduation Ellen locates in New York while Harry takes a job on the California-Nevada border. How can their romance continue with miles separating them?

“Ellen is crazy about you, Harry.”
“What makes you say that?”
“She always smiles at you, giving you compliments, and I thought she was going to clasp your hand once, held back and blushed.”
“Well, having played a few chess games with her hardly qualifies as time spent to form an opinion of me,” Harry said.
“Knock, knock, is anyone there?” Marla rapped on his head and then continued.
“We women have a sixth sense men don’t seem to have.”
“She did offer to show me the aeronautical campus where she spends most of her time. She even drove me out there and gave me a thorough tour.”
“I rest my case,” Marla said, smirking.
