The three are pursued to Paris where they seek ancient manuscripts held by a second group known as The Société that can expose the plot. Falsely accused of murder, Michaels is pursued across Southern France by the authorities and The Directorate. He must locate the evidence that will prove his story, vindicate him and Janet, and stop Jericho.

It’s time. Edna Fitzsimmons sat at a worn, steel-gray desk at one end of the government-green room. She crushed her cigarette into a spilled ashtray. She rose and walked to a smeared window that displayed a few summer students running across the university green, hiding from both the May rain and the muddy paths. Quaint colonial stone buildings from another era stood here and there, mixed with modern brick buildings along the commons. She lit another cigarette and turned toward the room.
She picked up the phone and dialed a long-distance number. A low-pitched tone revealed the connection was complete. Fitzsimmons entered a code, followed by the star sign. At a second signal, she entered her ID code, the date of May 25, 1993, and the id code of the recipient.
