Two days later, Theo called on Rose, ostensibly to see if she had received an answer from Raymond Burton, but more just because he wanted to see her. Fortunately, from his point of view, both aims were accomplished at the same time.
“I have received a letter from Mr Burton this morning, saying he finds our terms very reasonable,” she said. “So I would think you could begin to make some inquiries concerning Felix.”
“Had we known that, we could have asked more,” Theo said, “but never mind. I shall visit Felix’s college later today and see if he is indeed where he is meant to be. I rather hope he is.”
“So do I. That would be the best outcome for everyone involved. But if not …”
“Then we shall have to widen the scope of our investigation.”
“In that case, it would help if we knew a little more about him,” Rose said. “A description of his appearance, for one thing, and perhaps some information about his interests and what subject he is reading. But perhaps you will find that he is simply immersed in student life.”
“I expect I will. As I understand it, undergraduates participate in a great many activities totally unrelated to their subject matter. That especially applies to new arrivals, who are off the leash, as it were, for the first time in their lives.”
“Oh, dear. I hope Felix isn’t embroiled in anything too unsavoury. His father’s letter was most courteous, so it seems he comes from a respectable family.”
“They’re the worst kind,” Theo said gravely.
