Hiring a cab in Oxford can be murder ...
When Timothy Holt hailed a hansom cab in the center of Oxford, he had no idea it would be the last ride he ever took.Neither did Irene Appleby, who only learned of it when she was arrested for his murder. Hired to clear Irene's name, Milestone Agency operatives Rose Miles and Theodore Stone enlist the help of some old friends, take part in a dramatic crime scene reconstruction and discover that traveling by cab can be far more dangerous than they ever imagined. 'Oxford Jade' is the fifth novel in the Milestone Agency Victorian Mystery series.

“Very well, that is perhaps something I can confirm,” Rose said. “Mr Stone will speak to Inspector Reed and then arrange to visit Miss Appleby at the prison.”
Mrs Preston looked from one to the other. “That’s real kind of you both,” she said. “Why d’ye do this sort of thing, anyway? I know why you was mixed up in it when Preston was killed, but other folks’ business … well, it ain’t nothing to you, is it? Can’t think you’re gettin’ rich off it.”
Theo grinned at her. “Hardly. I suppose because it is satisfying to be able to help someone, especially when they’ve been falsely accused. As you so rightly say, I know how that feels – a combination of fear and anger, compounded by helplessness – although fortunately I was never actually thrown into prison. So we will make some inquiries and see how the land lies.”
“I don’t want her hanged for something she didn’t do.”
“No, course not. Nor do you want the true criminal to escape justice.”
“Too right, Mr Stone.”
It was one of the few times she had called him by his name, and Theo was touched.
“We’ll do our best, Mrs Preston.”
“And you’ll tell me how it’s going?”
“Yes, we will do. I expect you’ll be at the church, so we’ll find you there when we have something to report. What’s the number of Miss Appleby’s house in St John Street, by the way? We may want to speak to the cook or maid.”
“Number nine.” She heaved herself to her feet. “I’ll be off then, and let you get on with it. Ta for the tea and sandwiches. Right tasty, those were.”
“I’m glad you enjoyed them,” Rose said. She rang for Pickett, who materialized so quickly that she suspected he’d been listening at the keyhole. If he had, it would be interesting to see what he had made of Irene Appleby’s way of life and subsequent incarceration. She hoped he wouldn’t take the attitude that it served her right.
