“Tell me, Mama,” Rose said, “ what do you expect Theo or I to do about cousin Harold’s intentions? We can understand your misgivings, but I’m not sure that we could do anything to change the situation.”
“But we simply can’t let him do this.” Charlotte’s voice was almost a wail. “We’ll be the laughing stock of Oxford.”
Theo had a feeling that Charlotte had already had her sensibilities tested to the limit by having to defend Rose’s choice of a second husband. He felt somewhat guilty about that, despite their happiness together.
“I would have to ask,” he said, “if Mr Winters was unsuccessful in persuading Mr Wright he was acting unwisely, do you think Rose or I would be any more successful? It’s not that we are unwilling to try, but we are of a different generation, and of course, I don’t know him at all.”
“If you could just try,” Charlotte said, her voice rising again. She got it under control and continued. “That’s all I ask. Perhaps you could find out something about the woman that would discourage him. I honestly don’t know how you would go about it, but I am at my wits’ end and Henry refuses to go back and speak to him again. Harold will just have to suffer the consequences of his foolish actions."
