A fictional crime set against the backdrop of a true event in 1980.
Brian Connell was a photographer with a short attention span where wives were concerned; he went through three of them in five years. But that didn't mean he was guilty of murder, and it didn't stop him from dashing off to photograph an erupting volcano, accompanied by writer turned detective Jessica Hughes. Her job is not only to report on the eruption, but to keep Brian out of the clutches of the law until she and partner Philip Burgess can track down a killer who is as hard to pin down as a cloud of volcanic ash.
'The Ash Cloud' is the second novel in the China Cove Mystery series.
Excerpt
Mrs Connell didn’t want to divulge anything about her husband, but she wanted him tracked down and made to confess anything he’d been doing wrong. After which, I suspected, she’d be looking in the phone book for a good divorce lawyer. So she took a deep breath, gave me another disapproving look, and told us all about him.
His name was Brian. He was forty-four, probably a few years older than his wife, and at a prime age for roaming. She supplied a picture, a snapshot which showed a rather good-looking man with dark brown hair and blue eyes smiling at the camera. There was a vaguely Celtic look about him, a certain roguish quality. He’d worked as a newspaper photographer for a while, it seemed, then decided there was more money and less aggravation in selling the equipment.
Having done my stint as a reporter on small newspapers, I could sympathize. There are just so many high school football games and accident scenes you can photograph without losing your sanity. And he was smart enough not to set up his own studio where he’d be stuck taking pictures of weddings, prom couples and cute kids.
