As they walked hand-in-hand for the last few blocks, the weather changed. Dark clouds had moved in from behind them. The park was in front of them now, and they could see Burt sitting inside the gazebo located in the center of the grassy area. The wind speed was also increasing, and the boughs of the nearby trees were flexing in the stiffening breeze. Burt sat facing the opposite direction. His elbows were on his knees, and he held his head in his hands. A light sprinkling of rain began to fall as they walked across the grass. “I didn’t think there was any chance of rain today, Grace?”
“There wasn’t. This is strange.” They stepped up into the gazebo and approached their friend. “Are you okay, Burt?”
He sat up and turned to face them. It was clear he had been crying. “No, I’m not okay. Mom is sending me to that damned school. I’m just in her way. I want to be alone, okay?”
Grace sat and put her arm around his shoulders. “We are your friends, Burt. We want to help.”
A bolt of lightning slammed into the lightning rod on a nearby building, followed by the boom of thunder.
“I don’t want your help. Go away already.” He shrugged his shoulders, and she removed her arm.
“Burt, chances are that all three of us will be sent there. We’ll still be together,” Carl reasoned.
Burt stood. “Right now, I could not care less. Don’t you understand? My own mother is choosing her boyfriend over her son. If you won’t leave, I will.”
Another lightning strike hit one of the nearby trees. The boom of thunder was even louder.
“It’s not safe to be out in the open when there’s lightning. We have to wait here.”
“Screw you, Carl, and you too Grace.” He ran out of the gazebo.
“Come back, Burt!” Grace shouted.
A third bolt of lightning arched across the sky and stuck Burt on the top of the head. But rather than a single blast, the lightning bolt did not stop. After two seconds, Burt floated up into the air with his arms out to the side. Lightning shot out of his hands. One bolt struck the gazebo and set the roof ablaze. The bolt from the other hand struck a tree in the park and split it in two. The lightning stopped, and Burt fell to the grass. Almost immediately, the clouds seemed to evaporate. In less than thirty seconds, the sun was shining again as Carl and Grace raced over to their friend. They had expected him to be gravely injured or dead, but instead found him laughing. They stood over him.
“Was that cool or what?” he said and then started laughing again. He stuck out his arms and spread his fingers. Tiny sparks of electricity flashed through his hands. After a few more seconds, it stopped, and Burt stood.
“Are you okay?” Grace asked while staring at Burt’s hair which was still standing on end.
“I feel great! And I’m not mad anymore. I’m sorry for being such a jerk.”
Carl smiled. “You’re alive, and that’s all that matters. My mom gave me a twenty, so let’s all get ice cream sundaes.” They walked away, arm in arm.
