They woke the following morning to see that snow had fallen during the night, three or four inches coating the garden and bare tree branches, and decorating the tops of walls and railings with a delicate white layer. In St. Giles Road, the busy street in front of their house, the snow had already been churned up by passing vehicles, leaving piles of slush where wheels had gone through and thrown it to one side.
“It’s lovely,” Rose said, looking out of the window, “but rather perilous underfoot, I expect. We shall have to be careful when we call on Mrs. Plummer.”
“Indeed. When should we go, do you think?”
Rose considered. “Not too early, but before luncheon, I would say. We don’t want to interrupt any afternoon callers with questions about disappearing objects.”
“Or possibly dishonest servants. But what would any of them do with a china bowl, a letter opener and a handkerchief?”
“An excellent question. It’s hard to see any of her servants taking those items, but if not, why are they missing? Mrs. Plummer is in full command of her faculties; she wouldn’t have simply moved the things and forgotten she had done so.”
“A mystery indeed,” Theo said cheerfully. “Let us hope it has a quick resolution. I should hate to see her Christmas spoilt by worrying about it. And as she said, if not resolved, more objects of greater value could disappear next.”
