Excerpt
“Theo, look. Over there.”
Theo reluctantly dragged his attention back to the present. Rose was looking back in the direction of the pavilion, where a police constable, recognizable in his uniform and helmet, was moving in a rather odd manner. He was half running, half staggering, and as they watched, he stumbled and fell to his knees on the path.
“What on earth …” Theo started to say.
“He needs help,” Rose said. “He’s either ill or injured.”
She gathered her skirts into handfuls for easier movement and started toward the constable, who was now trying to get to his feet. Theo caught up with her and they hurried across the grass.
“Good Lord,” he said, when they arrived at the man’s side. “It’s Constable Wheeler. We’ve met on other occasions, haven’t we? Theodore Stone. And my wife, Rose.”
“Yes, sir, we’ve met before.” Wheeler attempted a smile. “Mr. Stone, I am that glad to see you again.”
Rose ignored the exchange of pleasantries. “Your arm is bleeding badly,” she said, indicating a large patch on Wheeler’s sleeve that was darker than the rest of the navy blue tunic. “What happened?”
Theo had extended a hand to Wheeler and helped him to stand up. The constable swayed a little but managed to stay upright.
“Can’t say for sure, ma’am,” he said to Rose, “but I reckon someone shot me.”
