I know what you’re thinking, sitting there kinda smirking, like “are you kidding” ’bout this tale being a true story? “A vampire-werewolf in South Arkansas”—come on.” Yeah, I know that’s what’s going through your mind ’cause that’s what everybody in Norphlet thought while all this stuff was happening, and we were running around town trying to warn folks about the vampire-werewolves and the other god-awful things roaming around down in Flat Creek Swamp.
But don’t be like those folks who didn’t pay us any attention. Listen up: What I’m about to tell you really did happen. It happened just like I’m telling it, and if you don’t believe me ask my good friend, John Clayton. He was right there in the middle of everything, and he came so close to being zapped by a 10-foot cottonmouth you wouldn’t believe it. Uh, huh, it was a 10-footer—maybe bigger—cottonmouth, and that snake was just a part of the dangest bunch of stuff you can imagine, and we were lucky as all get-out to not have had a one-way trip to the undertaker.

“Yeah, I guess I should have written this book under a pen name, or maybe just have moved to Texas when it came out. My God, I can’t believe some of the crap I pulled during those four short years. But, hey, nobody’s perfect, and if all those goodie-two-shoes who will stick up their noses when they read this book, really told what they did in college, I’ll bet it would open some eyes.
My guess is, that you’ll read this book, and then start asking questions—just like my wife did. “Did you really do that?” Or “Who was Millie? Or “Did you really play poker all the way through college?” Or maybe you might wonder just where fiction ends and non-fiction begins? That’s a hell of a question, because as I wrote this book, I wrote both. Yes, parts of this book are non-fiction, but as any publisher will tell you, if there’s one sentence in the book that’s fiction, then the whole work is fiction. So, I’ll leave that one up to you. You decide if “Sandy” really was the rascal I made him out to be, or was “Sandy” a victim or maybe both. And when it comes to breaking and entering, or just ordinary cheating on a test, is there any difference in how you do it? Or, if a young man is desperate, is that an excuse for illegal behavior?
So, my recommendation is, for you the reader, to just sit back and not worry if this or that is fiction or non-fiction. Actually, it might be more fun to read, if you read this book as a non-fiction diary of a college rebel—which it could be—of course, one sentence of fiction, makes it a work of fiction.”

However, north of their town is a German Prisoner of War Camp, and just when everyone thinks the War with Germany is about over, there is an escape from the camp and a rabid, Gestapo Colonel leads five former SS Soldiers on a mission of destruction. As the POWs race south to attack the South Arkansas oil refineries, they end up camping in Flat Creek Swamp, just a few miles south of Norphlet. After stumbling upon their camp, the boys plot a daring capture of the POWs. However, that wild summer had a lot more going on than just German POWs on the run. A crazy vision by the boy’s good friend, Ears, has everyone in town changing their name to “Jasper”. And while all of that is going on, Homer Ray’s, bullying causes the boys to try and stop the bullying for good with a trick to end all tricks. Yes, all the Norphlet characters are still part of this wild summer, as Big Six, Doc, Bubba, and Marshal Wing fit right into the story. Rumors say that a large contingent of Taliban and al-Qaida fighters will infiltrate Afghanistan, but to get detailed information Josh must travel through the treacherous Khyber Pass to Peshawar, Pakistan, where he will meet with a high-ranking government official. The mission to intercept the fighters is a success-however, one man killed is the president's cousin. Political furor erupts, and the Army court-martials Josh.
Back in Washington, a review of the year's Special Operations missions reveals that all were failures, with the exception of the one carried out by a unit that Sergeant Josh Martin trained. Josh is called back to the States from Afghanistan. He impresses the panel with his analysis of all the missions, and he is ordered to re-open Camp Thunder. As a result of that training, Special Operations Forces carry out numerous successful missions. When accurate intelligence about al-Qaida becomes difficult to obtain, Josh is sent back to Afghanistan to contact his former sources.
Meanwhile, Josh and Nafisa communicate on encrypted cell phones. The two devise a plan for Nafisa to travel with her mother to Spain, where Josh will meet them.
The president of the al-Qaida Leadership Council hires an assassin, PATTO BIN-TAWAGALI, to kill Josh. Bin-Tawagali kidnaps the couple as they leave their wedding celebration. They are taken to an abandoned building, where the two are tied to chairs to await execution.
