This book is the first in-depth study of golf course architecture of the 1800s. It reviews Old Tom's life and his leadership in the development of golf as we know it today. Blame having to play 18 holes on him. He was the guru of the Old Course at St. Andrews ... and loved by all.
Born in 1821 in St. Andrews, Scotland, Tom Morris began his golfing career in the feathery ball era. He witnessed the transition from feathery ball to gutty ball to the lively rubber-cored ball that appeared at the turn of the century. He also encouraged early golf clubs to form and laid out their courses around the UK and Ireland. His advice was sought by all including notable golf course architects such as Alister Mackenzie, Donald Ross, and Harry Colt (designer of Pine Valley in New Jersey, perenially ranked number one course in the world).

The story begins with seven people enjoying a single malt tasting. Their challenge is to solve the puzzle, “quid est veritas.” One of the group, Caballo Blanco, having adopted that nickname during a hailstorm on Machrie links, has an idea, a strange one.
Three years later, the seven meet again to compete in the Queen of the Hebrides Open and the inaugural Single Malt Marathon. Several run their first marathon. Others can’t run. Some play golf. A few drink whisky. Lives are changed. Secrets are answered. It’s Scotland!
