The life of controversial Emancipationist Cassius Marcellus Clay, son of the wealthiest slave-owner in 19th-century Kentucky and founder of the nation's first integrated college (Berea College, Kentucky), who granted freedom to his inherited slaves and to many others and spoke out openly against the "evil institution of slavery," making him countless enemies throughout the slave-owning South. The play was originally performed in Kalamazoo, Michigan by the Rockhill Free Theatre Players in February 2003. |
