Tom Harding embarks on a road trip to the coast of Maine, abandoning his home, job, and unfaithful wife in Arizona. During childhood he endured brief but unusual out-of-body experiences when falling asleep. As an adult, the frequency of these episodes has decreased. On the first night away from home he has such an episode and dismisses it. On the second night, another episode takes him farther than ever before. Still determined to reach Maine, Tom meets Vicki Culpepper, a beautiful woman from Iowa. The attraction is mutual and immediate. She accompanies Tom on the trip and together they work to solve the mystery of his ever-increasing experiences during sleep, which now take him to a place nearly fifty years back in time. A fatal car accident, a woman named Marcy, an old Volkswagen, and Vicki herself hold keys to the answer.
His grandparents were both dead now, but Tom still had vivid memories of his visits with them. The generation of his grandparents and even his parents was that of a much gentler time. It was a time when people could sleep under the stars on a big porch without fear of some lunatic coming along and attacking him; or more likely,her. It was a time when people could go to a diner and order whatever they wished without fear of cholesterol levels or how many grams of carbohydrates the food contained. Frank Somers is a timid fourteen-year-old middle school student who is persecuted by his peers. Despite his misfortune, he befriends a classmate. Following an accident, Frank lies in a coma for two and a half days. His parents and friends see him lying in a hospital bed with an I.V. in his arm, connected to machines that monitor his vital signs. From his perspective, he is in Las Vegas, and ten years older. The concept of time is juxtaposed in a very bizarre,anachronistic fashion. A gorgeous redhead and a U.S. President who has been dead for over a century guide Frank back to his present life. Having witnessed a world seen by few, he emerges from his coma with a renewed sense of self-esteem and confidence.
EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER ONE:
In a bold but apprehensive move, Frank slowly began to slide his desk toward Kelly's. They seemed to be including him in the conversation now, which had something to do with the other girl's brother releasing a well-executed fart in a restaurant where their family had gone out to eat last night. While Rick was still trying to memorize some atomic symbols, Frank continued to inch his desk closer to Kelly's. Suddenly, Kelly caught on to what Frank was attempting to do, and said, "Are you trying to move closer to me? Get away before you make me vomit!"
