Jake's dislike for Radisson's mega-projects, destruction of nature, and purchase of Haida artifacts turns into contempt when Jake's crew and the government take Radisson's side. Half-Haida archaeologist, Jake Lalonde, visits his ancestral home on British Columbia's Queen Charlotte Islands. The island chain is the home of the Haida. The couple arrive at a time when conflicting political, financial and cultural interests have disrupted the Haida settlement. A wealthy logging company, on which many of the Haida depend for jobs, are cutting on protected land, a move that threatens to decimate acres of sacred forest. In addition, dead animals—brutally slaughtered—are popping up everywhere, and some of the locals have begun to blame the Wasgo, a sea beast of Haida lore.
