Dans ce livre, Emile Tubiana nous rapporte la période la plus marquante de son enfance, celle qui a été perturbée par la dernière guerre. Son regretté père était la sagesse personnifiée. Sa mère ne cesse de le couver de son amour. Ses sept frères et sœurs n’ont pas quitte son sillage.
Son récit très coloré nous promène dans son pays natal en de pénibles circonstances. La fuite des lieux des combats par une famille nombreuse avec tout jeunes enfants est éprouvante.

In this book, Emile Tubiana tells of the most striking period of his childhood, the one intruded on so sharply by World War II. His late father was wisdom personified. His mother never stopped showering her love on him. His seven brothers and sisters never remained far from his footsteps.
His very colorful story takes us through his native land under painful circumstances. The flight from the places of battle with a large family with small children is a trying experience, as the author describes in great detail.

A short poem, transmitted by the author's great-grandfather to his grandfather, then to his father, and in turn to him, inspired Emile Tubiana to write this account of a king's love at first sight for a beautiful and virtuous widow. The story is set in Baghdad, during the reign of Harun Al-Rashid, in the time that followed the battles between the caliphate and the Byzantines.
