In The Mood is a psychological murder mystery involving New Scotland Yard detective Philip Graves. The main plot is set in present day 1985. Suffering from mental exhaustion, Graves is called back from London to the family village after hearing that his father has been viciously attacked. His father, a retired police sergeant, is part of a team workng on an unusual traffic accident involving a 25 year old mummified body of a man found encased inside a bridge column. In an attempt to find the perpetrators of his father's attack and believing that there may be a connection with this case, Graves stumbles on a chain of events that would change his life forever. His own investigation unearths the dead man's chequered past and that of 3 other ex-sailors and there employment at an orphanage outside of London between 1943 and 1953.
Archive records show that all 4 died in a fire at the orphanage in 1953 so how could one of the bodies die again in 1960?
The origins of the mystery go back to 1943 when twin baby boys are orphaned when their parents are killed during the 2nd World War and placed in Harrington Orphanage.
Chapter 1
Another Time, Another Place
They said that it would only last a year at the most, those faceless
civil servants I had learned to despise. A propaganda ploy to enlist the young and vulnerable I thought? The war was portrayed as a big adventure for those who had never strayed beyond England’s coastline. A ‘jolly’ I remember someone saying at the time, paid for by Winston Churchill. A quick visit to France, miss out winter in England, which wasn’t a bad thing for most people given the employment crisis and poverty, and back home before anyone knew that the | |  | | Inspector Philip Graves and the Schutzstaffel Array
It’s 1945 and the fabled Schutzstaffel Array, a golden shield commissioned by Hitler for his generals is stolen by British mercenaries in Dresden, Germany. The shield contains the location of the last resting place of treasures plundered by Nazis from neighboring countries, treasures that would fund a second uprising, should the war be lost. The shield contains a map, which can only be accessed when all 5 accompanying daggers are inserted to release a central compartment door.
Between 1960 and 1974, each mercenary is killed in a very distinct way by the same murderer and their dagger taken from them. The last dagger is taken after a struggle with the mercenary’s son, his daughter-in-law and the family au pair who are unexpectedly at the house. The au pair is killed, the daughter-in-law and son, badly injured. The son is accused by MI6 of the murder of the au pair and attempted murder of his wife, following his publicized affair with the au pair and he flees to Easter Germany to a safe house he knows of from his past as an MI5 agent, the place of birth of the au pair. His own head injury causes him to lose his memory and for the next 16 years he lives under another name, unaware of his past. He is diagnosed with a tumor and as it grows it puts pressure on a certain part of the brain and he begins to remember what happened 16 years earlier. He returns England to clear his name and to find the real attacker that night, but he is killed before he can expose the man concerned. Before he is killed, he bumps into Inspector Philip Graves of New Scotland Yard by accident giving him vital information about his past following the attempt on his life, which Graves witnesses and so begins a quest by Graves to find who killed his mystery man.
Graves discovers that the man’s death and the mythical existence of the Schutzstaffel Array are inextricably linked and eventually, what really happened that night in 1945 in Dresden and later, to each of the 5 mercenaries. His investigation takes him back to the scene of the crime now in 1990 in Dresden Germany and Konegstein Fortress, the final resting place of the Schutzstaffel Array and the stolen treasure.
