Why is he so different? It cannot be the water. Nor the fact that he was born of a virginal mother. Perhaps it was the way he approaches things. Why?
The story is age-old: a child is born in a small town in the middle of nowhere, to a virgin mother. He grows up learning that there is something special about him -- something which will make him either "a great man" in his father's eyes; or a freak show attraction. He and his mother travel from town to town, and the child receives some precaution and some advice from an old man fighting his own devils. The young man learns love, hate, pity, compassion, fear, pride, and along the way learns that fame is a very fleeting thing. Will he and his mother survive? For some reason -- I have lost where I came from. I don't know if I have a family for sure. I think I do. I am not even sure if I am married or not. I just keep on helping people stranded on the side of the highways of our nation, well, because someone helped me in that same way.
My name is Travis McKee. Maybe you've seen me and my Chevy Lumina on the side of an Interstate highway somewhere.
