The book analyzes the main character’s rise to the corporate boardroom of a large mortgage banking firm and how quickly it ended. It describes the lessons he learned from the good and the lessons he was taught by the bad.
In an excerpt from the book, the author states;
I knew what was going to happen. The company image was inflexible. Corporate officers are white, Protestant, Anglo-Saxon and healthy. Cripples and other visual misfits need not apply. When the company discovers that I don’t fit the accepted image, a “reason” to replace me would suddenly appear. I had seen it happen. I had been a part of it. It would be quiet. It would be subtle. She is beautiful, intelligent, the daughter of the richest man in town and has a bright future. He has nothing. He knows if they remain together Karen’s father will turn on her and she will end as just another nobody in Whiskey Creek, North Carolina.
