Election Time USA and the Theatre of the Absurd
We’ve heard it said again and again ever since we were kids—voting is more than a right, it is a duty, nay, a sacred duty. And elections have consequences. Don’t vote and you have no right to complain about the consequences. The list of admonitions and trivialities goes on and on.
What the same self-appointed civics teachers do not say is that truth is the first victim in any political campaign. It is instantly replaced by lies, propaganda, and money. Lots of each. As the campaigns kick off, you and I, the patriotic voters, are asked to step forward brimming with zeal and knowledge and the power of the ballot box in sight only to be inundated with the most absurdly demonic television ads ever created by man or beast. These ads are carefully crafted to insult your intelligence and mine, and to create voter gridlock under conditions of moral intoxication. They are formulated under the assumption that we are retarded amoeba, and incapable of processing anything but inane lies repeated again and again for weeks that persist until we will actually upchuck our food. Yes, it is our patriotic duty to vote, but first we must be battered into a zombie-like state of obedience, inculcated of, by, and for the brain dead.
With one week to go we are entering that period that is compared to the “home stretch” of a horse race. It is when millionaires and billionaires exhort us to give and give our last full measure of devotion, aka money, even if we must mortgage our houses, sell our cars, and put the kids up for adoption in order to assure that the other bastards do not win the elections. Yes, the same sons of bitches who proclaim that poverty is for losers are now pulling every trick from the Josef Goebbels’ book of propaganda to put us there.
And what will be the consequences in the U.S. Congress?
Nothing. We will still have gridlock. No bills will pass. If the Republicans gain a majority in both houses, no bill passed by them will be signed into law by Obama. And if the Democrats retain a majority in the Senate, all their bills will continue to be stopped cold by the filibuster. And so the 2014 Congressional elections will go down in the annuls of American history as “much ado about nothing.” Mission accomplished.
American elections are a massive display of the theatre of the absurd in action, where the only thing that makes sense is that nothing changes. But isn’t that exactly what those at the top of the wealth charts want? They will have spent a few million dollars of “chump change” in freezing everything in its place. And when the dust has settled, they will still reign supreme atop the totem pole of wealth and power. Yet we will have moved from the brink of poverty to safely within the poverty zone where the port-o-potties foul up the air, the flies are less friendly, and the feces linger longer. It is a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury signifying nothing.
