The current administration operates on two levels: covert and insidious.
It's hard to believe that "covert" can be used to define actions that are so blatantly obvious to those who choose not to look away, yet there remain those who refuse to believe what is right in front of them. They prefer to live their lives like ostriches with their heads hidden in the sand, completely ignoring the missile headed straight for their collective asses. As long as they are not directly impacted, who cares, right? My grandmother always considered calling other people “fools” to be right up there with calling them more base names. She preferred the term “idiots.” Personally, when it comes to the current political environment, I'd say there are ample examples of both.
"Insidious" is a term that resonates with me as I follow the news. Again I find myself astounded that such obvious actions as the mass deportations of thousands of law abiding immigrants (and their descendants), the takeover of Washington, the impending takeover of Chicago, the “review” of the Smithsonian's contents, and, God help us, the gutting of the Centers for Disease Control, can fail to open the eyes and consciences of those who stubbornly refuse to see their elected leader for the villain he is. Slowly his poisonous doctrine is spreading across the country. When and how will it be stopped? How many times must Trump's followers be reminded of German history before they accept the danger they've placed us all in?
Someone facetiously asked me the other day how long I thought it would take before the government tries to return the indigenous population to Siberia. My response? A lot sooner than it will take to deport Melania. Another question I've been asked is how long I believe it will be before the country is completely brainwashed into believing the government's actions are honorable. That one was even easier. So long as there are those who see through the obviously covert and insidious actions of the Trump administration, the answer is never.
We are fast losing our right to refer to ourselves as “We the people of these United States.” We, now more than ever, are a country divided into “us” and “them”. And all because so many of us steadfastly refuse to notice the missile we've allowed to boomerang and which grows ever closer to destroying what it means to be an American in the best meaning of the word.
