An Interesting Experience At The Voting Booth Today

Nancy and I had an interesting experience today while voting. Today, Election Day, we went to the Cromwell High School to exercise our freedom and civic duty to vote. We pulled up, parked and  as the wind was brisk and blowy, it was quite cold. As we walked to the high school doors we passed by the candidates and their tents where most of the candidates were shivering.

One candidate was without a tent and had been kicked off the Republican Party Board of Ed for a variety of reasons. Being a person who dislikes authoritative persons I was sympathetic to her position. We spoke with her and she agreed with most of what she was saying.

I told her of my belief that no student should graduate from. Cromwell High School without a thorough back ground in American history, civics or government. Having spent 30 years in the classroom, I felt I know my way around a classroom. She agreed and Nancy said that when she was in high school she was required to read Hitler’s Mein Kampf. She added that this was so her classmates could recognize any repetition of the return of the next would be Hitler. I added that too many kids were graduating from high school and college without a thorough background in where we came from and that this is why we are in the position we are. In short, Trump is a would be Hitler replacement.  

The Democratic candidate for the Board of Ed agreed. What was interesting was the reaction of the Republican candidates. At first they agreed with me about history, civics and government education.

But when Nancy spoke her beliefs about reading Hitler’s Mein Kampf  and how we did not want to repeat that time in history, the Republicans looked puzzled and did not look at her. They stared at the ground. One rolled his eyes. She also said that Trump was reenacting Hitler and they didn’t know what to say. They fumbled and stuttered in response.

This is why we will be voting Democratic this year as we always have in the past.
