Hooked--Book Review

Hooked, written by Les Edgerton, published by Writer's Books, 2007.

It's all about the hook! And, as Les Edgerton informs aspiring writers, it's highly recommended that a writer dangle the bait at the earliest opportunity. This idea is so critical to a favorable reception that Hooked, by design, is a book primarily about "beginnings."

Here are the most critical "beginnings" identified by the author:  the "opening sentence;" the "inciting incident;" the "surface" problem; the "story worthy" problem; and the "setup." Forget about prologues (unless it's an established series), and beware of too much backstory.

Edgerton analyzes story-telling structures in an entertaining as well as convincing narrative. For added emphasis, he cites "inciting" examples from successful novels and also sets forth instructive critiques from established literary agents editors, and publishers. All in all, Hooked is a positive learning experience worthy of your time and attention.
