I love the movies of the thirties and forties. By far my favorite is the Ghost and Mrs. Muir. The Captain, so dashing, the heroine so lovely and demure, yet strong, ahh… Growing up, watching those old black and white ghost stories on the television thrilled me. If you’re old enough to remember The Haunting, I think you’d agree that movies without all the visual effects, just heavy breathing, mumbled talk and turning doorknobs were enough to send you knocking over your Jiffy Pop and Orange Crush while diving under the covers. I simply adored them, even if I slept with the light on for a week after.
My new book, Those Who Wait, has a similar bent to both those stories, but is unique too. It’s a love story with a few ghosts thrown in for good measure. If you’re looking for hot, steamy sex scenes, you won’t find them here. Not that I don’t think they’re appropriate, I just can’t stop laughing when I write them, so I don’t. My characters are no prudes, but like the actors of old where they had to keep one foot on the floor if they were on a bed together, my love scenes are there, but not real “hot.” In An Affair to Remember, Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr didn’t “do it,” for all to see, but talk about a romance. Right?
It’s a story about love, loss and reunion. Something we all deal with at one time or other in our lives. I hope my story gives thought that those we love and are gone from this world are waiting for us to come home to them. Waiting…
