I am a R. N. with a masters in nursing of children.  My fourth child was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 6.  I was overwhelmed as i tried to find information and understand this medical disorder that affects most environments in which he is participating.  i became a parent2parent family instructor for CHADD, Children and Adults with ADHD, a non-profit organization that provides support and information to families who have children with ADHD.  I teach 7 week classes to families who are desperate to understand their children and advocate for them.  This lead to me writing a book called The Seventh Inning Sit:  A Journey of ADHD.  This is a book of advocacy as I show the reader how ill equipped the schools are to support these children.  It is vital to  have as much information as possible in order to ensure that your child with ADHD is supported in the school.  It is a rough journey at times but imperative to travel.  Without us, the parents, these children will many times falter and fall.  There are so many co-existing conditions with ADHD that need to be understood.  Without appropriate support in the school, self-esteem plummets, leading many times to the risky behavior of self-medication.  My book, The Seventh Inning Sit, shows my personal journey that I have been on and will continue to be on as my son goes through the challenges of growing up and navigating the school systems.
