I write because it is necessary for my well-being.
I publish for the well-being of my books.
It all started with the Behold the Eye trilogy. As the original story grew from one book to three a changed happened. Each book developed its own unique personality. It was like the trilogy had become a family, with Braumaru the oldest sibling, Cerulea the middle child, and Viridia the baby of the family.
I guess that made me the mom.
Like all good mothers I nurtured my little creations, devoting long hours to make sure they grew to be the best they could be. It was hard work, but so, so worth it.
Until that fateful day when I discovered that my five year long project was complete. The books were finished. I had done everything I could for them, my little books were all grown up.
And, like the human breed of children, they wanted to leave the nest, explore the world, be on their own.
Braumaru, the eldest of the three, was the first to speak up, and would not quit talking about the joy of publishing, and the necessity. Braumaru claimed that no book could ever be complete if it were not published.
I tried to make Braumaru understand. I said, "No, it isn't necessary to publish. You should be satisfied with your life as it is. You should just be happy that I wrote you."
That was when Cerulea butted in and said a book that was not published had no life. A book only lived if it was read. It would not be fair to the trilogy if I left them unpublished.
I replied, "Life is often not fair. Besides, I'll read you."
Viridia, sweet little Viridia, just glared at me.
"Don't look at me that way," I said defiantly, "publishing is a lot of hard work! I have other things I need to do."
But my trilogy was strong. They stuck together and proved to be very persistent. I fought long and hard, but I was outnumbered.
I gave in and published. Just between you and me, I'm glad I lost the battle to those bossy little books. They were right, it was not enough for just me to read them. They need to be read by many. |
