We’re in your hell. Who does that make you?

Who Are You?

There are those of us with no way out. Those who’ve paid the dues, walked the miles, swung the hammers, carried the loads, jumped through the hoops, and still wound up buried beneath the rubble.

We aren’t lazy. We aren’t trying to get something for nothing. We are trying to get rid of what we have – multiple sclerosis, arteriosclerosis, cancer, AIDs. We’ve fallen and we can’t get up. You find humor in that.

We hurt. And you spit on us as you kick us aside or step over us.

Your prayers haven’t cured us or made us disappear. Your God hasn’t put the goodness in your hearts to help us, to stop blaming us, or to realize you are not better than us because you were born in a healthy body.

Your words and inactions destroy what our diseases haven’t already taken. It’s not enough for you that our bodies have failed us. You aren’t satisfied until we’ve lost our homes and spirits as well.

We’ve done nothing to you. We’ve done nothing to deserve our fate. We don’t want to live and we can’t die. You’ve destroyed our lives and jailed our Dr. Kevorkian, because, after all, you believe you own our souls and the rights to our decisions.

You decide we should live without medical care and pain medications. You don’t care if we have dental care, because you don’t think we deserve food or homes to eat it in.

We’re in your hell. Who does that make you?

Powerful write which I know to well... many years ago I heard a saying which fits this well "Religion is for people scared of going to hell, while spirituality is for people who've been in hell." I know what hell is, I don't worry about the next life, I'm just trying to survive this one...

Michelle, thanks for reading and responding to my article 'Who Are You'. I didn't mention Christians in this article, so your comments are a bit confusing but I will try to address them as best I can. There are many people professing to 'have religion' yet they do not care about the basic needs of others. They 'pray' for what they could and should do themselves, instead of doing, and believe that excuses them from making kind, wise choices. If my 'anger' upsets them, they either aren't paying attention, or the shoe fits and they've decided it isn't as pretty as they once thought. Anger is a rational and useful emotion, when used as motivation to make changes. I have been angry about the same issues my whole life. When I had money and energy, I devoted much of it to helping those who didn't have what they needed. When I didn't have money, I still devoted my time and intelligence to fighting for the cause. As long as I am alive, I will continue to do the same. It has nothing to do with any religious beliefs, it has to do with WHO I AM.

Sandy this is a very powerful piece and I understand it com-pletely, and I also have felt your anger from time to time. I think Michelle is misreading you, the anger is not against Christians in general only the ones who proclaim to be Christian until it is time to stand up and be counted and then all of a sudden don't ask us for money, food, clothes, medicine etc but we will say prayers. Prayers aren't always enough. Powerful write Sandy.

Very powerful well written rant filled with a lot of pain and anger but at the same time there is a very strong message weaving all the way through that needs to be fully understood and heard. Great write.

I have lived with disability with God and without God and believe me you have a much brighter when you are with God at least I have. You seem to have an anger or something against Christians, have all Christians hurt you in some way? The piece was well written there is no denying that, but it seems a bit angry to me.
Michelle!
