How to save a life with an old cell phone.
The other day while I was in The Body Shop on 125th Street in Harlem, I noticed a sign at the cash register soliciting cell phone donations for an organization that helps battered and abused women. All you have to do is bring your old cell phone to the store and they will send it to the organization or recycle it. Since I have a couple of old cells sitting around collecting dust I thought it was a great idea since there are so many women out there who are suffering in silence at the hands of abusers . A simple donation of an old cell might actually be the life line for one of these women and/or her children. This is a nationwide initiative by the The Body Shop being offered through August 15th, but if the store nearest you doesn't accept donations this organization will. It is a great way to give back to others because we all love to say, "it will never happen to me." Ironically it does happen more often than we would like to believe and sometimes it happens to someone who is close to you. In addition to The Body Shop and Collective Good there are other organizations also accepting donations of used phones. This initiative is so powerful because it has the capacity to help so many women who have become paralyzed with fear due to domestic abuse. Just think, your trash can become someone else's future. *Note: underlined text denotes links to sources mentioned.
