Thirty-two years ago, on December 28, 1973, Congress gave bald eagles and many other threatened animals a second chance at survival by passing the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

For more than 30 years, this Act has protected magnificent creatures such as the bald eagle, gray wolf, Florida panther, grizzly bear, and sea otter from extinction.

But three decades later, despite the ESAs success, Congress is trying to roll back the clock on our endangered wildlife.

Last September, the House of Representatives passed Congressman Richard Pombo's (R-CA) ‘Wildlife Extinction’ bill, which would now gut the current ESA.

This dangerous bill exempts all toxic pesticide decisions from ESA compliance; replaces the current mandatory critical habitat system with an optional system that fails to protect habitat essential for recovery and continued survival of many animals; and even requires the federal government to use taxpayer dollars to pay land developers for compliance with the law.

But the fate of the much needed Endangered Species Act will ultimately be decided in the U.S. Senate.
