The Desire for Change by Samantha Scott

With half the year gone already I have seen the lives of those around me change, some in small yet positive ways and others in quite a dramatic fashion. Each person feeling that unless these changes are not brought in they will experience misery forever! Through my work and the people I meet I am very much aware that this year seems to have brought with it a strong desire in almost everyone to bring changes into their lives whether large or small. It is as if no sooner had the alcohol of New Year’s Eve celebrations worn off than they found themselves feeling restless, dissatisfied, incomplete and mostly feeling very much alone despite being surrounded by family and friends. Yet they are living within an existence that they have felt perfectly happy with for years - so why question it now? Is it right that anyone should feel this way? That they should suddenly feel that life does not give them what they want or need and that some how they have become forgotten or last on the list within their own lives. Lives that they themselves have been creating quite contentedly. After dismissing these feelings as post Christmas blues many carried on in their own sweet lives but for others the restlessness did not pass, instead it buried itself a little deeper, yet close enough to be felt every now and again through anything from the odd twinge of dissatisfaction to an extreme unhappiness.

I am not just talking about housewives or those who live what they would describe as ‘normal lives’, I am talking about people from all walks of life whether successful, wealthy businessmen or ‘stay at home’ mums, all cultures, all religions. It is as if a ripple of energy has moved through our very beings to ensure that we start to question our existence. It is that nag at the back of the mind that never quite goes away. A nagging thought that leaves us unable to sleep, waking from dreams and the constant turning of our bodies. We feel as if something or someone is trying to tell us something and yet no information comes. This in turn leads to even more questioning and the desire to look at life from a ‘deeper’ perspective, is this really all there is to life? Could there be more than what we see? Is life simply about procreation and survival, survival in today’s society meaning earning enough money to pay the bills through the drudgery of nine to five?

When I too began my period of change this year I found myself needing to express my own feelings. I logged on to a forum and expressed how I was feeling. I was inundated with responses, mostly from people who were very clearly heaving a great sigh of relief that they were not alone in this experience, so pleased to find someone to talk to openly about how they were feeling. Too afraid to mention to loved ones in case it would cause upset or alarm within families and relationships. They too were waking at four am every morning as if woken to remember a dream that they could not recall. Lying awake with a sensation of having been somewhere else within their sleep or processing information or being involved in long conversations that they just cannot recall yet feel they should. All of this activity creating even more of a pull to discover why they feel this way.

Were we all experiencing the same energy? The same dream? The same process? I believe so. I believe we were and many still are and that we continue to do so. We were all experiencing an awakening: a reminder, of who we truly are. It was as if energy was pulling us to some place far away to remember the purposes that we came here to fulfil and basically get on with it! All who experience this ‘awakening’ are pulled to more spiritual things whether to work in a spiritual context or simply to develop their own spiritual identity. It is as if the word ‘purpose’ has suddenly become crucial to our existence.

So how do we deal with ‘awakenings’ such as these? We accept them. Instead of fighting the experience and creating inner turmoil, we open our eyes to what is taking place, acknowledge that we are in some kind of transition period and we follow our hearts and explore the feelings that we have. We do what feels right. We feed our souls with the very information or experiences it now desires so strongly and we choose to enjoy the process. This experience is about choosing to love yourself as well as those around you. It is about taking care of your self at a spiritual level. I would suggest that we include spiritual reading, meditation or experiences into our routine just as we do going to the gym or socialising with friends. Make time for you. Discover who you are and where you wish to be in life.

Following your spiritual path is not about wearing purple robes and eating raw vegetables for the rest of your life, it is not about giving all your material things to charity, it is instead about living a balanced and more loving life.

Seeing the world and all those in it through loving eyes, accepting that all of those around us are also following their spiritual purpose whether conscious or subconscious. It does not require you to walk away from the life that you are currently living it is merely the act of implementing things and experiences that allow you to grow as an individual and experience the real you. To experience a more fulfilling life which in turn allows us to give so much more to life.
