“God used Lady Hope, wife of the First Admiral of the British Fleet, to reach Charles Darwin with the Gospel during the last years of his life. He was bedridden, and she’d often visit him. One afternoon, as he was reading his Bible, she asked, “What are you studying now?” “Still Hebrews,” he replied. “I call it the royal book. Isn’t it grand?” When she mentioned how popular his theory of evolution had become he gave her an anguished look and said, “I was a young man then, with uninformed ideas. I thought out queries and suggestions, wondering all the time… and to my astonishment, those ideas took off like wild fire. People made a religion out of them.”
Later, Darwin asked Lady Hope if she’d share the Word of God with some of his friends in the garden summerhouse. She asked, “What shall I speak about?” He replied, “Jesus Christ and His salvation. Is that not the best theme?” Dr. Victor Pierce, an Oxford scholar, says, “When someone tells you evolution explains everything, tell them that Darwin discovered a better theme – “Jesus Christ and His salvation.” If they still doubt, invite them to read his favourite book which says, “In these last days He (God) has spoken to us by his Son…through whom He made the universe” (Hebrews 1:2 NIV). The greatest discovery Darwin ever made was finding Jesus as his saviour. How about you.?”

In any case, I would believe the observational and predictive power of the principal Darwin uncovered with the strength of his unsullied younger mind more than I would any wishful anecdotes purporting his conversion from a beautiful scientific persuasion to that of an old man on his death bed fearful of an afterlife.
His whole later life had been spent revelling in the discovery that there is no such thing as an afterlife except in the form of biogeneration of other lives. (Most failure to comprehend the elegant simplicity of evolution is a failure to comprehend the profound power of deep time.) I would tend to attribute any such story as that related above to the myopia of those around this brilliant man rather than to any breakdown of his mental and spiritual capacity and capability.
However, if is true, we can safely assume the Bible reader was not the Darwin of evolutionary power, but a broken man due to the pressures of Lilliputian minds that at last found a way to drag him to their own level.
