Rurutu, the gem of the Austral archipelago, is dotted with limestone caves and is steeped in culture and honest smiles. Even though it's just a short 11/2-hour flight south from Tahiti's Faa'a International Airport, it is completely off the tourist radar. While the weather in Rurutu is often warmer from November to March, the best time to visit is between July and October, when migrating humpbacks come close to shore to reproduce before heading back to icy Antarctic waters. . .
