All too often, people are having children because they believe they have the right to, and are doing little for the children's rights to have loving, caring, supportive parents. This article details some thoughts on the matter.
As a mother of four children of my own, I agree that having children is not a decision to make lightly. I think that many young people today are having children simply because they can. My teenaged son is already a parent and has another child on the way. He is learning the hard way of the responsibilities of being a parent. Having children is a decision that should be thought out for as you stated, it is a lifetime commitment. Excellent article Nicole!
I had mixed feelings about this article. However upon reading it I agreed in many areas. I do agree that children are should be a high priority in our lives, as a mom of four I dedicate all my time to my children. I do not believe that people just have children to have them. I think some wind up pregnant on accident and others plan to have children. I don't think the decision is made lightly. I also believe in quantity time as well. I am always disappointed when I hear of a couple both working deciding to have a child and keep both their jobs. This means they have a child that will be raised in a day care environment and not at home with a parent that chose to have them.
However I don't believe that the government belongs in our decisions regarding children. Family is a sacred institution that should not be invaded by outside sources unless true child abuse and neglect is very evident.
It is difficult enough to get young pregnant girls to get prenatal care and to have the government require all pregnant women to go to governmental, politically motivated child preparation classes is going a bit far.
This is a diverse country. There are rich parents, middle class families, and poor ones. We all grow into adulthood with unique sets of problems to overcome and accomplishments to gain.
The part where you said children are our equal is wrong. As you stated later, we parents have to be willing to give 100% with knowing that our children will not be able to return that until adulthood. Parents should be in charge and provide loving homes with fair discipline that steers our youngsters into a positive productive adulthood. We have to be regarded respectfully as authority figures for children to learn these qualities by example and guidance.
Although I disagree with the politics of your article I very much appreciate your value of children and the respectfulness of good parenting.
