An article written by Janis Ramsay, a reporter for the local paper in Alliston, ON Canada. A similar article written by Janis was also featured in the local paper in Barrie, ON about 30 miles away.

Author pens book about experience in China

BY JANIS RAMSAY

Sharon Lockwood has written her second book, Beyond the China Sea, this one inspired by a trip overseas.

Lockwood, an Alliston resident, learned quite a bit while visiting China to teach English as a second language last summer.

“I lost my job here as a site supervisor for a construction company, and had wanted to teach English overseas or on a cruise ship,” said Lockwood.

When the latter didn’t pan out, she packed her bags and went to a small place called Wuhan, in central China.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect.  One of my first encounters was the traffic, going from the Shanghai airport to the municipal airport.”

Not knowing any Chinese, Lockwood used hand gestures to confvey her message.  Fortunately, she had help from locals and reached her destination.

The book tells stories about some of the people she met, the children she taught who didn’t always want to be in English class, and her tour of popular sites.

Lockwood said when Chinese go sightseeing, they cram as much as they can into a day.  Visiting various Buddhist temples, looking at the Great Wall of China, taking a train, and looking over rice fields are some of the scenes in the book.

Lockwood sent e-mails home to friends about her travels, and she was encouraged to write this book when she returned home.

She hopes to go to a new destination to teach English in the future, but is just enjoying staying in Alliston for now.

                Her website is www.authorsden.com/sharonelockwood.

Beyond the China Sea is available on-line at www.publishamerica.com, and Chapters and Coles online.

Lockwood has planned a book signing at the Coffee Time shop at the corner of Dunlop Street and Hart Drive in Barrie this Saturday.  She will be there from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
