A nation of “fools”

By Robert Amoroso

It seems that we can no longer distinguish between protecting our vital interests as a nation and common sense issues. Case in point, a young man in Georgia with an incurable form of Tuberculosis, was allowed to fly abroad and back into the United States, perhaps spreading the disease. Obviously this young man should never have traveled, and indeed was told by health officials of the potential hazard.

Of course once this event became public knowledge, everyone jumped on the “band wagon”, from the health officials, to the airlines and finally to the news media, each pointing fingers and vilifying this young man, and it didn’t take long before our esteemed politicians joined in the feeding frenzy, and soon the topic of conversation around the country was “how could this happen?

No doubt this was a thoughtless and foolish act, and this young man should be held accountable. Needless to say there’ll be investigations into this matter, and once again our “esteemed politicians” will jockey for position and new legislation will no doubt be enacted, they’ll go in front of the TV cameras and once again convince an apathetic populace that everything is right with the world, and we’ll once again foolishly go about our business, convincing ourselves that the potential health hazard has been contained.

Of course they’ll never address the nagging question “what of the 12 to 20 million illegal aliens that have infiltrated our boarders and now live and work among us”? And what of the potential health dangers we face?

They’ll never admit that they have collectively put us in danger and in harms way, and that they bare the responsibility to the oath they swore to uphold, “to protect and defend”. It’s outrageous that all three branches of government, from the president on down, have not addressed this potential health hazard and are willfully putting us in danger, arguing among themselves like spoiled brats, pontificating and grandstanding, inept in their attempt to correct the mistakes of the past and allowing a continuing breach of our boarders.

Have we become a nation of fools? Do we not see the dangers that lie ahead? If one case of TB can gain international coverage, and concern among the medical community, imagine what the potential health risk of having 12 to 20 million undocumented aliens living among us.  For the most part these are hard working people, looking for a batter life, they are poor, with little or no education or skills, they pick our produce, wait tables, and handle our food, and yet the medical community along with our illustrious leaders in Washington seem not to care.

This issue goes beyond political affiliations or parties, beyond left or right, liberal or conservative, this issue goes to the very heart of who we are as a nation, and what we should demand from our leaders. We’ve already suffered through 9/11 do we need a national health crises to wake up Washington? I hope not.
