Despite the fact that people spend close to one-third of their lives sleeping, almost every aspect of sleep remains a mystery to most people.

Despite the fact that people spend close to one-third of their lives sleeping, almost every aspect of sleep remains a mystery to most people.

Sleep is a state that your mind experiences. The mind, in turn, is an object perceived by the Spirit that dwells within every individual. When an individual gets up from a deep sleep state and says, "I enjoyed a sound sleep," it is this witnessing Spirit that reports upon the quality of rest. Even when the mind sleeps, the inner Spirit does not sleep!

According to Carl G. Jung’s analytical psychology, the mind can be at any one of the three levels of depth: conscious mind (the waking state experienced in the physical body), subconscious mind (the dream state experienced in the astral body), and unconscious mind (the deep sleep state experienced in the causal body).

During the deep sleep state, our mind becomes unconscious and our senses do not function; we sink into our Source and become reconnected with our inner Spirit. This is the reason why we feel so energized and refreshed after a deep sleep. Sleep scientifically proves that the secret of attaining freshness and peace lies within, not outside.

According to scientific research, during the normal decent from wakeful state to deep sleep state, the brain wave frequency descends from the fast Beta waves to the relaxation of Alpha waves, then down to the drowsiness of Theta waves, and finally into the deep sleep state of Delta waves. As Delta waves in the brain become very intense, we approach closer and closer to our inner Spirit.

For sleeping well, here is a very powerful technique that consists of two steps:

The first step is to become aware of your breathing. Your breath is tangible; you can feel it, understand it, and concentrate on it. In this technique, all you have to do is to add awareness to your breathing. Simply transfer your awareness from the body to the breath in the nose. Feel every breath with total attention to the natural movement of your in breath and out breath. In other words, become aware of your awareness - “I am breathing in, I am breathing out; I know that I am breathing in, I am breathing out.” As you inhale, feel the calmness spreading throughout your body. As you exhale, feel that your worries are flowing out of your body.

Once you are able to concentrate on your breathing for some time, then you can move on to the second step, which is to listen to the soothing sound of your in breath and out breath. Listening to your natural breathing sound will gradually slow down your brain waves to Delta, leading you to a very relaxing deep sleep state. The important point is that the sound has a definite effect on the brain wave pattern.

By going to sleep this way, you can get rid of three types of tensions: muscular tensions, mental tensions, and emotional tensions.

By improving the quality of your sleep, you will improve the quality of your life. "Early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise" said Benjamin Franklin. To ensure a good sleep, it is important not only to observe regularity in sleeping but also to eat a well-balanced diet. A well-balanced diet includes lots of fruits and vegetables. Do not sleep with a loaded stomach since the presence of food in the stomach can disturb your sleep. When you get to bed, it is helpful to read an insightful and inspiring book like "Building a Noble World” (www.nobleworld.org). This way, you can get a lot of positive energy, helping you glide into deep sleep naturally.
