Walnut Street YMCA Black Achievers to host Regional Teen Summit
National YMCA selects Delaware Chapter as model for others across the U.S.
WILMINGTON, DEL. (April 15, 2008) – The YMCA of Delaware Black Achievers will host its first-ever Black Achievers Regional Teen Summit at its Walnut Street location and other downtown venues from April 18 - 20. Nearly 200 teens are expected from throughout eight Northeastern states, including Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland, to join about 65 members of the Walnut Street Teen Achievers for the three-day event.
“We are thrilled to have our sister chapters visit Wilmington for an exciting, empowering and enlightening Black Achievers Teen Summit,” said Claire Carey, executive director, YMCA of Delaware Black Achievers. “It is a great honor for the National YMCA to select our chapter to host this event, which will focus on the mission of Black Achievers – empowering our youth for personal, academic, and professional leadership.”
“We Rock The Stars” is the event theme, referencing the Black Achievers pledge that all YMCA Black Achievers are five-star ambassadors with the stars representing the Black Achievers themselves, family, community, education, and cultural heritage.
The summit, for teen participants and invited guests, will kick off with a rally on April 18 at the YMCA Multi-Purpose room on Walnut Street, 1000 N. Walnut St., Wilmington, DE. 19801. Some of the activities, include:
- Friday, April 18 - Welcome Rally, dinner, Teen Talent Showcase, Fraternity & Sorority Step Show
- Saturday, April 19 - Workshops for Teen Black Achievers on a wide range of topics including evaluating the role of women in music videos, spending money where it counts, and healthy dispute resolution (details of topics and presenters below). There also will be workshops for adults who supervise Black Achiever programs. The evening’s events include a banquet dinner followed by a teen dance.
- Sunday, April 20 - Prayer breakfast, church service and Teen Summit send off.
