Police knew more about murder than they released to the public. Why didn't the killer take the bait?

Many of you have heard of Brianna Denison, the young college student murdered by a serial killer who rapes his victims. Many people living in the Reno, Nevada area are especially leery and on high alert.

Well I've just learn that the police department investigating the case didn't release all the information to the public. They originally mentioned that they found a pair of panties not belonging to the victim with a man's DNA found on the panties at the crime scene.  Now they are releasing the fact that two panties were found at the crime scene. They refer to this in police investigations as "hold back" evidence.

Police are now reporting that the second pair of panties had the DNA of the victim, the serial killer, and an unnamed female who resided with Brianna.

Why did the police hold back the evidence?  It's a common trick and tactic usually done to confirm the killer's identity if he contacts the department  through a telephone call or email.  In other words, if the killer contacted police they could asked him , did you leave anything else at the scene?  The serial killer could then say yes, I left two pair of panties. At that point the police would know they were speaking with the real killer.

Apparently the tactic didn't work! They have now released the fact that it didn't work. Why did they do that?  Well I believe they realized the tactic will not work. What I'm saying is that maybe this killer is smarter than they thought, and they know it.

Obviously the killer has gone underground.  He has stopped all killing and raping, at least in the Nevada area.  I believe he is familiar with police tactics and procedures and may have had some contact or training with police procedures. Who knows, he may have even been an ex law enforcer or related to a law enforcer.

He would only surprise me in one area... if he stayed in the Reno, Nevada area. Then again, maybe a concern citizens might noticed that a certain person has suddenly move and tip the police. I can't see him staying in Reno and being comfortable. That's suicidal.

Okay, he raped all his victims and murdered them. That tells me that maybe he knew the victims could identify him.  He then dumped the bodies in areas that suggest he was familiar with the area. That tells me he at least knew the area. My guess... I believe it's someone soo obvious that one wouldn't even think he was a killer. The age thing bother me also. He could be older than 30 years of age.

All in the Reno area, be careful of everyone. Trust no one, period!

Howdy, Robert. This is a neat and thought-provoking article. As an ex-Reno resident, I am not terribly surprised at the lack of law enforcement expertise in Reno/Sparks. Heck, they cannot even control the huge volume of drugs which vector through Reno Cannon Airport enroute up through Tahoe and down to the San Francisco market area. How could they ever be expected to deal with a serial murder investigation? I think that the Reno police are more involved with connected business interests than they are with street-crime.

Law enforcement has many tools. Hold-back evidence is one of those. Tools are only helpful when the police know how to use them. Your article points out a lack in this area.
