One friend can change your world.

Much like Mattie Moorehaven in “No Hole Deep Enough,” I was lucky enough to have friends who carried me through some of the darkest times in my life. To this day and regardless of time and distance that separates us, they remain in my heart and I’m grateful to them beyond words. (You know who you are!) If it hadn’t been for them, I don’t believe that I would’ve ever had the courage to face the realities of my life; the ones that I kept hidden from the rest of the world.

Mattie realizes that having one good, solid friend in the world can mean the difference between hope and despair. It drives away the loneliness and darkness. A true friendship cares nothing of race or economic status. It is born of a bond between individuals, sometimes of common interest, sometimes of common background, but sometimes, it arises for no discernable reason whatsoever. Friendship is one of the strongest human bonds and likewise, one of the most compelling human needs.

However, for those who have faced tremendous adversity and pain in their lives, friends can mean the difference between survival and just plain giving up. Friendship can be a substitute for family, and true friends are loyal to each other, defending the other when necessary, just as a family member would do. The power and strength of friendship knows no boundaries. Friends share advice, ease hardship, and celebrate each other’s victories.

Long lasting friendships are sometimes the best. The shared memories and common experiences lay the groundwork for lifelong relationships. When it appears that the rest of the world has turned its back, old friends remain steady and true . A friend is someone with whom secrets are shared, dreams revealed and lives touched and intertwined. Some friendships are fleeting, but others last a lifetime. Each friendship that one encounters in life leaves an indelible mark behind, and knowing that a friend is only a phone call away is comforting.

“No Hole Deep Enough” delves into a person’s desire; no, desire isn’t a strong enough word, it’s more of a need for the human connection; the need to be understood and the need to be loved by even one other human being.

Friendship can mean the difference between life and death; just as it did for Mattie.
