Don Barber was invited to speak about his book and memories of his more than 50 years in Broadcasting.
Speaking at a local retirement community in Orange City, Florida recently, author Don Barber recounted many stories of his interviews with celebrities on his various radio and television programs over the years. His audience seemed charmed with the reminiscenses and several of them remembered Don from his days in Miami and Atlanta TV One of his favorite stories concerned a time in 1960 when he and his partner, Bob Clayton, had a popular nightime program aptly titled, "The Don and Bob Show" in Miami. The station was an NBC affiliate and as was the custom, they sent performers around to publicize their programs for the coming season. One such person was Lorne Green, whom Don did not meet before the show, and graciously gave this introduction:
"And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, the star of NBC's new program 'Bonanza', Miss Lorne Green." When this burly man stood up in the audience, everyone howled with laughter, including Lorne Green. Sometime later Lorne sent Don a black cowboy hat, which he still has.
