How we experience life depends on two very important factors in our lives. The one is our outlook on life and the other one is our attitude towards life. Outlook is how we see the world around us. Attitude is how we behave and how we act.

In this article Phil Minnaar explains the basic characteristics of a negative and a positive outlook as well as a negative and a positive attitude.

He then discusses five positive words which help to develop a positive outlook on life as well as five positive words for a positive attitude.

The word ‘Live’ is explained as follows in The Positive Dictionary:

Live: Live to the fullest.

To live is to experience the wonders of creation.

How we experience life depends on two very important factors in our lives. The one is our outlook on life and the other one is our attitude towards life. Outlook is how we see the world around us. Attitude is how we behave and how we act.

We can either have a generally negative outlook on the world around us or we can have a generally positive outlook on the world around us. When we have a negative outlook we tend to see mostly problems around us. We see possible difficulties and even threats. We tend to worry, many times about imaginary things that do not even exist. We tend to see the dark side in the world around us. We stress and stress can turn into distress. We tend to think irrationally.

When we have a positive outlook we see opportunities instead of problems in the world around us. Real problems become challenges where we can use our talents to find solutions. Instead of worrying we see the bright side in the world around us. We have time to laugh and to enjoy life. We think rationally.

When we have a negative attitude we become unfriendly, grumpy and lazy and we find fault with many things. Our behaviour becomes inconsiderate and our interpersonal relations deteriorate. We hesitate, we procrastinate and our performance becomes ineffective.

When we have a positive attitude we are friendly, helpful, active, hard working and we serve the community. We are courteous and compassionate in our relationships. We work diligently to get the best possible results. We care for our health and for the wellbeing of others.

We are constantly bombarded with negative news, events and trends in the world around us. We also experience negative situations. It is, however, all about a choice in life. We can make a conscious decision to be more positive in life. To create a positive outlook we have to think positively and to have a positive attitude we have to act positively. The choice is ours. If it is to be, it is up to me.

Positive words with good connotations are very helpful to become more positive in life and to handle difficult situations. It is easy to just pick an appropriate positive word, put it in the back of your mind and simply start practicing the meaning of the word. By acting on a word and its meaning it becomes part of our outlook and our attitude and transforms into a habit.

Here are a few examples of words relating to outlook:

Discover: Discover the beauty in your area.

Pure: Be pure in your thoughts.

Open: Open your mind to the wonderful world of books.

Embrace: Embrace that which has enduring value.

Recognize: Recognize the good in others.

Here are a few examples of words relating to attitude:

Bold: Be bold and fear will disappear.

Give:  Give from your heart.

Overcome: Overcome the obstacles blocking the path to your goals.

Calm: Be calm and composed in all situations.

Posture: Display a positive posture.

As we all know, life is a journey. We have a choice how we want to travel. We can travel through life with the brakes on, with tinted glasses and constantly looking in the rear view mirror. That can lead to disaster. The better alternative is to travel positively through careful planning, navigating around the obstacles on the road while observing and enjoying that which is good along the way. We can decide to live to the fullest and experience the wonders of creation.
