Letter from a cousin:

9/12/09:  1.5 Million Patriots

Hey, Mark!!!

Yesterday was an amazing day!!!!

We heard from Tea Party Organizers that DC Metro Police (who had laser crowd counters in their helicopters) that there were 1.5 MILLION patriots marching on the Capitol yesterday!

We started marching at 10 AM -  My family was in the beginning of the march - b/c we couldn't pass the crowd to get to North Carolina.  However, when we got to Constitution and Pennsylvania Avenues, we stopped marching and sat on the side of the road to watch the crowd go by.  LOTS of North Carolina flags!  WHOOO  HOOO!!!

DC Metro Police had to continuously block off roads and reroute the marchers - because the crowd was too big to fit around the Capitol and began stopping blocks and blocks away.

We sat at the corner of the two roads, and watched as the marchers kept coming and coming.  FOR OVER TWO HOURS masses of people marched by!!!

We shouted, as a group -  "CAN YOU HEAR US NOW!" and "USA!"  The most touching moment for me, besides seeing the size of the crowd, was a few minutes into the march, when the entire mass of patriots began spontaneously singing "God Bless America."  It was BEAUTIFUL and brought tears to my eyes and chills down my arms.

Here is a link to a few pictures from DC:

When I get back to NC, I will post many more on the Rutherford 912 website.  Unfortunately/fortunately we were unable to get a big group picture of the 60+ Rutherford Tea Party Patriots - the crowd was just too large and it was impossible to get through, after the police blocked streets.  However, I attached a picture of the group that we were able to find.  If you were at the march, please email me pictures so I can put together a slideshow when I get back! :o)

Also, here is a link to a video from CSPAN of the event (including some great crowd shots)

When I read of this event, it occurs to me that America is a traumatized nation: Traumatized by the hateful and tragic events of 9/11; traumatized by the ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; traumatized by the anti-Americanism so widespread in the world through the Bush years; traumatized by the collapse of the global economy; traumatized by industrial demise and the rise of China; traumatized by the enormous and growing cultural divide inside the US that has almost halted rational political debate. Hell - what country wouldn't be traumatized?

America is in something. The Democrats and the Republicans seem to represent two different nations right now. So the outcome of this period will very much depend on whether they can find common ground as Americans. If they don't, then the future seems uncertain, as the nation will lose its identity and purpose. Thinking longer term, it's even possible that the US might break up along political and state boundaries. History is replete with such events.
