If I could do one thing, and do it well...

If I could do olne thing, and knew I would not fail, I would do what I am doing at this moment.  I would write, and write well.  I would touch the hearts of others and fill them with passion, joy, elation, fear, sympathy, sorrow.  There would be no limit to the depth of emotion.  And my writing would say something, and be interesting and exciting to read.  It would be what I love reading, and have a passion to learn.  I would fill the page with romance and intrigue, adventure and good, clean fun.  If I could do one thing, and knew I would not fail, I would write, nd write well.

How would it chang emy life?  My schedule would change first and foremost, andchange gloriously.  I would not spend nine hours a day scratching out a living, helping someone else's business grow.  I would go to the library and do research in a real book, and not be frorced to surf the net so much.  I would learn more every day.  And I would exercise early every morning before settling down to write.  I would go to more Christian writer's conferences and take time to read for pleasure as well as for learning.  I would absorb everything I could get my hands on to make myself a better writer.  But most of all, I would wirte without answering the phone.  I would write and rewirte without anyone asking me what I'm doing.  Without interruption, and forgetitng what I just put down.  I would write because there is so much inside me that needs to be expressed without being annoyingly verbal.  I would laugh and cry out loud, and not worry about what anyone esle thinks about it.  I would write and read, and learn and grow.

How would it change the lives of the people around me?  Well, if I could not fail, it would only get better.  They would put up with rejection as deeply as I would.  They would rejoice when a piece or a book sold.  They would put up with deadlines and tolerate my tendency to teach other people what I learn, whether they want to know it or not.  I have a sweet daughter and a marvelous hasband, and I'm very blessed.  Blessed beyond description.  Really blessed.

Yes, if I could do one thing and knew I could not fail, I would write and write well.

If I could do one thing and do it well, I would lead all who came to me to Christ Jesus and His gift of eternal life.

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri
