An excerpt from What About Me
Of all the things precipitated from the light, on this world, only human beings have choice. No other animal, for example, can choose for themselves to do this, or that. They are compelled to be, and to behave, as they are. A lion can only be a lion. It chooses nothing, not when it will rise, or what it will eat, whether or not it will procreate, or if it will sleep. It has unconsciousness, an instinct that dictates and limits its life. All living creatures, flora and fauna, other than human beings, are limited in this way. It is why humans have advanced to dominate their environment. Humans have consciousness that allows them to transcend the limitations of the natural environment. Why? Is human consciousness an aberration of nature, an accident? Not likely.
Human beings have been designed to experience and to then consider what it is they have experienced, to find truth to questions implied by being. All learning is the result of experience. A book can explain to you how to assemble or do anything, but only when you actually put your hands on it will you learn the reality of it. The more one experiences something, the better he gets at it. A master mechanic didn't start out that way. Only in long practice was he able to completely understand his discipline and then master it.
What then, are human beings here to learn and consider? That depends on the individual and the Spirit that guides him. Spirit needs experience to grow. But remember, it is choice that is at the heart of learning here. Choice involves making decisions, and that is what we do. Just as a lion does what lions do, human beings decide.
