tongue in cheek with some good advice

I am 39 (well, I am actually not but what woman admits her age?). I have been married forever and know that one day my husband, who is 20 years my senior, will depart this plane of existence and leave me here alone. The thought sucks. It's a good thing I don't intend to try it again. This is my second marriage. My first one didn't work out and I was loath to try it again but found a person I call my "soul mate" and did.

My friends and I have talked about how different life is from when we were in the dating game. I have an unmarried niece in her 30's and I worry that she will end up dating the next uni-bomber. It is so uncertain out that. Carrie had it right on "Sex in the City"; it's a jungle. How on earth does a single gal find a man she can fall in love with and not end up with Mr Totally Wrong?

I came up with several things that today's dating girls need to do and even as I put it in a book (entitled Aunt Sugar's Guide to: Getting Revenge On Your EX And What You Need to Know Before You Marry Your Next), I wondered what is going through their minds today. How on earth do you meet someone today? In a bar? Okay, the "what's your sign" line is still around and a good opener but you don't learn anything with it. The music is so loud and the drinks are flowing and there's always the chance that a little date-rape drug will get poured into your cosmo. Will you wake up and find yourself naked in a hotel room with no memory? And if he is an ok Joe and you end up going out how do you know he won't abduct you or murder you???

If it were me, I would be like: "Here's an application. Fill it out and bring it to me over there where there isn't so much noise." By the time we ever got to dancing or even having a drink together I would know the guy's life story;  have spoken to his parents on the phone; interviewed his past 6 girlfriends and run a complete background and criminal actvites check along with a credit report.  THEN we could think about a date.
