The first spring at Low Arvie - a very short extract from 'The ladies of Low Arvie'

It was exciting throughout the next few weeks to watch the garden changing at Low Arvie. There did not appear to be much plant life when we had first arrived in the summer, but, as the winter changed to spring, we found a wonderful array of snowdrops appearing, followed closely by beds of wild daffodils. These were all over the lower part of the lawn and in the little wood at the west side of the garden. These last had to be searched out and spotted, just peeping through the tangle of brambles and dead rosebay willow herb stalks, and I vowed that one day they would be able to bloom unhindered by such obstacles.

Slowly the cold receded and the warmer weather began. In early March, we began to let the calves out of the shed during the day time and let them roam in the small paddock between the house and the road. It was grand to see them back outside where they belonged, and they were glad to be there and galloped about kicking their legs in the air. When April was well in and the grass beginning to grow again, we would bring the cows back to the farm from the west end and put them into the boggy Eastside and let the calves out on to the safer fields, where the cows had spent the winter.
