Even though October is fast drawing to a close there are a number of events at the UW-Madison Arboretum at 1207 Seminole Highway.
Saturday, October 23rd
Core Area and Curtis Prairie ecological restoration work party. Volunteer to work and at the same time learn about prairies and savannas. Tools and training are provided. Meet at the gravel parking lot along Arbor Drive just off Monroe Street.
All About Owls 1-3pm. The instructor is Slyvia Marek an Aboretum naturalist. The class will include a slide show, owl calls and stories. Registration is required. Cost is $13.50 or $12 for members.
Under the Autumn Moon night walk. 6:30-8:00 pm. All ages are invited to join an Arboretum naturalist for a walk under the full moon. The walk is free.
Sunday, October 24th
Badger Trolley Tours at 1, 2 and 3 pm. Trolley rides begin at the Visitor Center and each tour is approximately 45 minutes and is narrated. You will see the prairies and woodlands and the fall colors. It’s an opportunity to learn the history and purpose of the UW-Arboretum.
Earth Partnership for Families 12:30-4pm. The program on the 24th is “Preparing for Winter.” The class will focus on seasonal changes and how everything in nature prepares for the harsh Wisconsin winter. You will learn how to make a model of a log home used in the past by Wisconsin settlers. Families will learn about the concepts of migration and hibernation and those animals that remain active during winter months. The class includes a naturalist-led hike from 1:30-2:30pm. The class is free.
Sunday, October 31
Tour of the Lost City from 1-3:30 pm. In the 1920’s the Lake Forest project was started with the idea of developing a “Venice of the North.” The residential area failed because of a lack of understanding of the land. Learn more about this failed project which includes both a lecture and walking tour.
