Sometimes the hardest thing to do in life is to look in the mirror. Quite often we see someone who we don’t like at all. Isn’t it funny how our reflection can be unforgiving? A lot of the inadequacies and vices we live everyday with, although not physically manifested somehow confront us as we stare into the looking glass. We go through life with masks and we create an image of how we want others to see us. It can be success, or achievement, it might be popularity and confidence. And if we can just fool one person into believing that we’ve got it all together than maybe we can be accepted. You see that is the key, being accepted. God forbid someone doesn’t like us, so why not adjust our lifestyle to fit in. Oh what a sad bunch we are! We stay on dead end jobs we hate, we linger in relationships that are going nowhere and then we put up fronts to survive. No one ever wants to be thought of as a loser by peers or family members. The world is insensitive and sometimes down right cruel. So you better keep your guard up so no one knows your shortcomings. Well, you may be able to fool the folks around you but there are a couple of people who cannot be fooled. They know “YOU”, they hear “YOU”, and they see “YOU”, when no one else does like during the middle of the night or while driving in your car on the way to and from work. When you’re out with non-Christians and the conversation goes awry. They are always there!!! You can’t hide from yourself and you can’t hide from God.


Self assessment can be an eye opening adventure because it will reveal to you changes that you should consider within certain areas of your life. We take for granted the physical, financial and relational realms to the point where it becomes too late to make any necessary adjustments. All too often we meet people in the middle to later stages of life that we hear saying “if only” and we sympathize with their sadness. These folks have had abilities that could have been cultivated into a productive business venture or a ministry of some sort, but because of choices made without proper prayer, consultation and consideration they now reside in a state of disappointment and resentment of themselves and others.


Isn’t it funny how it is so easy for us to point out the faults and failures of others quicker than our own? Yes taking that long, hard look is difficult to do but it could be the inspiration we need to finally resolve to make changes while there still may be time. Remember what you see in the mirror is only the shell of who you are. What’s in your heart, soul and mind will be the driving force you need to be all you can be for yourself, your family and for God. After all He sees you as His most prized creation and He believes in you when no one else does
